BASIS International/Bilingual School Chengdu

BASIS International/Bilingual School Chengdu

Opening in fall 2022, BASIS International/Bilingual School Chengdu will serve students in grades Pre-K – 10, and will eventually expand to offer courses through Grade 12, with a capacity of over 1,800 students. This campus will be our first to house both an international and bilingual curriculum in one location. The school’s facilities will include state-of-the-art classrooms, cafeteria, library, gymnasium, science labs, and plenty of outdoor space.

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province--home to famous historic sites, cuisine, and culture. Our school will be located in a new area of Chengdu, a high-tech area in the southwest of the city. The master-planned location will include plenty of green space, and is convenient to the Chengdu airport as well.

From the Head of School

My wife, and two children, and I are thrilled to be moving to China and opening BASIS International/Bilingual School Chengdu.

I chose this particular opportunity because I believe in the vision of Dr. Guan, Chairman of Ascend Corporation, and Dr. Reford, Chief Executive of Head of Schools. To be part of an ecosystem of schools growing in numbers, striving to be the best in China by focusing on high-quality teaching and learning is music to my ears. To collaborate, not compete against, other BASIS schools is another factor that drew me to this opportunity, as this is a model that does not exist in U.S. Independent Schools. Further, to open a brand-new school with a team of outstanding administrators, teachers, and high-quality operational support is exhilarating to me.

China is extremely fascinating to me for so many reasons. China is on the move, and its constant growth and focus on being a global leader in education, technology, etc. appeals greatly to me.

Living in Chengdu

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province—home to famous historic sites, cuisine, and culture. About 1,300 years ago, Li Bai, the greatest poet in the Tang dynasty, described Chengdu as a prosperous, peaceful, and beautiful place in one of his famous poems. This certainly remains true today, as Chengdu has consistently been considered as one of the happiest cities in China, and one of the world’s 15 Happiest Places by the CNN Travel Channel.

Chengdu has the largest hospital in China, easy shopping in neighborhood markets, and also the Chengdu Global Center—the world’s largest stand-alone building, approximately the size of 20 Sydney Opera Houses and 8 Beijing Olympic Stadiums.

The city is also home to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Numerous other outdoor recreation activities are within easy reach as well, including Qingchen Mountain, the Bamboo Ocean in south Sichuan, rafting, hiking, and skiing. High-speed rail lines also connect the city to almost all other major cities in China.
